Mom, the baby with the square head

Mom, the baby with the square head

Recently, I was passing around my iPhone, sharing family photos from the 1970′s, and my friends marveled at Mom’s teased hair, Dad’s sideburns and Kate and my long hair (hair down to our waists!) It made me think about how versatile Mom’s hair has been (mine has been very boring) over the decades.

Mom has resumed chemotherapy infusions, returning to the Carbo/Taxol combo that she received during season 1 & 2. This particular drug is very effective at removing hair, so knowing that Mom’s hair will be falling out soon, we’ve decided to post photos of Mom’s hair styles from over the years.

As far as we know, the photo above is the first one taken of her. It happens to be Kate’s favorite, since Mom’s head is square, and it makes me chuckle at the adorable baby looking at the camera. Enjoy!

Oh my goodness….Adorable!! You already had a sweet and knowing little grin. And your little hairs remind me of our duck’s fluff before his real feathers came in. I hope the sun is shinning on you there in Bellingham as it is here in Seattle. You beautiful Baby you! Love, Kelli

My first memory of you was in pigtails. They were thick and brown and my thin blonde stringy ‘do’ was no match for them. I think they might look rather fetching on you now – no – wait – maybe not. You sure were a pretty baby!

It will be fun to look at the hairstyles-through-the-years photos, Elizabeth. Thinking of you today as you go for your treatment — I hope there will be a chance to visit you again before I go to see my Dad in California this Thursday.

What a cute photo! Hey Nich – that was exactly what I was thinking! “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea – Sponge Mom Square Head!” It is a long story as to why I know the words to that song. Miss Izzy – I hope you are able sit in the sun and soak up some vitamin D.

HAIR! The bane of some people’s existence!
My sister Donna McAllister got THE hair in our family…usually attributed to Aunt Sue (whoever she was!
As a child I remember watching my mother put on her lipstick and powder her nose after trying to make more hair on her head by fluffing it up…which evolved into teasing.
However, when Marty retired thirteen years ago and we were more ‘on the go’, i decided to try simple hair maintenance…wash and wear pulled back with a barrette….many of which were given to me by you, Elizabeth, when you changed hair styles back to more of a pageboy and not like the Dutch Queen.
So for many years I have no longer complained about my wimpy hair (although it drove my mother crazy! She was always wanting me to die or bleach it one color It bothered her that I like colors in my hair.)
My dear friends who have battled chemo and loss of hair are a great source of comfort and inspiration. Bald is beautiful as I remember Dinah Kukas bravely standing in the checkout line at Hayden’s Thriftway, Red Apple, etc.
Why is it HAIR grows where we do NOT want it (on the chinny chin chin) ….just like grass….not where we want it but where it wants to be.
By the way, all Dog People! I just finished reading A Dog’s Purpose AND though I am a MEOW person, I enjoyed it and think I understand dogs a little better now.
We are still in Idaho at the lake where neighbor LAB Sadie has adopted us….Donna even bought her real dog biscuits so she would stop (not) eating the turkeys’ bread scraps we like to throw out as all 9 turkeys appeared.
That’s it from the lake, dear Elizabeth! HAPPY, HEALTHIER, “HAIR-FREE” AUGUST!!
    LOVE, Gail

    Hi Aunt Ibby,
I love the picture! It’s fun to see a photo of you ‘back in the day’. I’m reminded of other pictures – also those of Kate and Anne with long hair.
    Love,
    Curt

    Hi Ibby,
Love the picture!!! Same big beautiful sparkling eyes!
Just found some old photos of my mom. She was shocked to see herself with dark hair! My childhood memories were that her hair was so black that I honestly wondered if she put shoe polish on it!
And then there was our dear GrandmaLu’s long, long hair. I remember watching her braid it.. forever it seemed. Then there is my hair. Bob says I have lovely blond hair but he doesn’t understand why I dye the roots dark brown!
We are heading to Florida for a couple of days. It’s been cooler there than it has been here, believe it or not.
Kristin was just here along with her best friend, Katie, and my best friend, Judy (aka Katie’s mom) for our annual mother-daugher weekend. The girls have been friends for 31 years; they turn 34 within a month. They met at age 3 when Katie jumped into the pool and landed on Kristin’s head. Nice way to start a friendship, huh?
I’m emailing you a picture of Silas on his latest trip to Oklahoma with Sarah to visit her mom. He’s obviously done quite a bit of airline traveling for a 2 year old!
Sending lots of good wishes, big hugs, and prayers your way.
    Love, jama

    Hi Elizabeth-
I love the idea of watching you grow up in photos. Adorable baby photo, can’t wait to see the next one. Are there awkward teenager photos to come?
    Love,
    Jodi

A bright beauty from the beginning!
    XOXO Yvonne

  15. Betsy Wright Says:

No kidding a square chin but not head!) then and now! I hadn’t thought about it but you are the poster child for square, Ibby.

I was expecting to see hair pics thought the years, from Annie’s comments. If they are their I’m incompetent at finding them.

Gee I wish I could drop by to see you. I hope this treatment treats you right! Love, BETSY

  16. Diana Buist Says:

No question, my favorite is the posting of the photos in the hand me down clothes from her brother. That was the story of my life as a child! Threadborne clothes with patches sewn on. I also love the photos from the baby years. It’s fantastic that have you scanned and cataloged them. talking about all those adventures and memories with parents and grandparents is second to none!
